Bathers (Working Title) - Work In Progress
5’ x 4’, Oil On Canvas
The last time I worked on this was early May during finals week. Since then I have been adjusting the body of the figure on the left. I have altered the legs a bit and started adding depth. My goal is to really get the feeling of foreshortening. I think I am well on my way to my goal. I also added in that blue/green on the ground the figures are sitting on. I am currently liking that painterly diagonal movement more than the dark emerald green I had before (you can see some of it up top).
My plans are to continue rendering the hands, legs and faces, but try to be gestural about the movement in the legs. Hopefully I can be more conscious about value and depth in this painting than I have been before. Since I am on break and I have no deadline I have more time to focus. I am so thankful for that because during the school year you are asked to pump out so many pieces you don’t have time to think about what you are doing.
I am enjoying where this is going so far.
Feel free to message me. I’d love to hear your input.

As well as being fun to ride on, roller coasters are beautiful sculptures to me as well.
Before I realized I sucked at math I wanted to build and design roller coasters for a living.
Fun fact about Alex.

Study of Jenny Saville’s “Pause”
Graphite on Paper, 8.5” x 11”, 2012
I decided to make a sketch of Jenny Saville’s Pause painting. I absolutely love the amount of agony she expressed in this painting. The hands are so beautifully rendered in the painting. I actually noticed that there as another hand grabbing the torchured subject’s right arm. That gives the painting a whole new meaning for me.
I was also reading my catalogue for the exhibition in West Palm Beach that I attended months ago and the events from September 11, 2001 inspired themes in this painting as well. It is so fascinating how disastrous events such as that can inspire such beautiful works of art.

Self Portrait(Work In Progress)
Charcoal and Gouache on Paper, 42” x 88” (106.7 x 223.5 cm)
Original Artwork by Alexander Reynolds
I was working all morning and afternoon last Thursday on my drawing final. I changed my original idea to something I would enjoy. I borrowed the pose from Jenny Saville’s Isis painting that I saw in Florida during her solo show. I absolutely love that painting. Enjoyed painting the hands and penis because I got to be very planar and abrupt with how I handled the media.
For some strange reason I seem to have so much difficulty rendering with dry media. When I render with wet media it comes naturally to me because I don’t have to focus on contour and layering the graphite/charcoal/conte crayon to get my desired effect. With paint it happens immediately and my on those things that I stated earlier. With paint I focus on value and shapes, which I tend to enjoy more.
